Basic Poutine: A Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to a savory journey where we unravel the art of basic poutine. This classic Canadian dish, a delightful mix of crispy fries, rich gravy, and shredded cheese, is a comfort food favorite for many. Whether you are a poutine enthusiast or trying it for the first time, this step-by-step guide will help you create the ultimate poutine experience in the comfort of your own kitchen.

While we love and make many different styles of poutine, tonight was just a quick basic poutine that is simple to make. We were even low on instant gravy's and had to mix a few flavors together, which turned out pleasantly delicious!

The Essentials: Ingredients and Preparation

To start your poutine adventure, gather these staples:

  • Frozen crinkle cut or straight cut fries (crinkle cut works best)

  • Shredded mozzarella cheese (do not use pre-shredded, it does not melt properly), you can also use cheese curds if desired, we like to use a mixture of both if we have them. But shredded is the way to go to get full coverage.

  • A savory beef or turkey gravy to tie it all together - tonight we used 2 gravy packets (brown and mushroom) and 2 canned gravies (beef and turkey) mixed together.

Preparation Steps:

  • Bake fries in oven according to package directions, or deep fry/air fry if preferred, extra crispy helps prevent your poutine from becoming soggy.

  • While the fries are frying, warm your gravy on low heat, ensuring it's smooth and ready to pour.

  • Grate your cheese and set aside.

  • Once the fries are golden and crispy, assemble some on a plate, crown them with cheese, and generously ladle gravy over the top, repeat in layers (layers is key to fantastic poutine)

Serving Suggestions and Flavor Variations

While traditional poutine is a timeless favorite, don't be afraid to get creative with your toppings and flavors. Here are some serving ideas and variations to tantalize your taste buds, we will add recipes of all our wonderful variations as we create them as well:

  • Classic Poutine : Stick to the basics with grated cheese and beef gravy.

  • Loaded Poutine : Add bacon, green onions, and a dollop of sour cream for a decadent twist.

  • Vegetarian Poutine : Swap the beef gravy for a mushroom or vegetable-based version.

  • Spicy Poutine : Drizzle your poutine with hot sauce or jalapenos for an added kick.

Embrace the versatility of poutine and make it your own with unique toppings and flavor combinations. Whether enjoyed as a satisfying snack or a hearty meal, poutine is a culinary experience that never disappoints.

We also prepared dinner for tomorrow night since we have a busy work day tomorrow. Check back tomorrow to see our recipe for the best mac and cheese ever!
