Welcome to a delicious journey into the art of making classic poutine. This iconic Canadian dish, featuring crispy fries, rich gravy, and melted shredded cheese, is a beloved comfort food for many. Whether you’re a longtime fan or trying poutine for the first time, this easy step-by-step guide will help you create the perfect poutine right in your own kitchen.
While we enjoy creating many different styles of poutine, tonight we made a quick and simple classic version. We were running low on instant gravies, so we mixed a few flavors together—and the result was surprisingly delicious!
The Essentials: Ingredients and Preparation
To start your poutine adventure, gather these staples:
- Frozen crinkle cut or straight cut fries (crinkle cut works best)
- Shredded mozzarella cheese (do not use pre-shredded, it does not melt properly), you can also use cheese curds if desired, we like to use a mixture of both if we have them. But shredded is the way to go to get full coverage.
- A savory beef or turkey gravy to tie it all together – tonight we used 2 gravy packets (brown and mushroom) and 2 canned gravies (beef and turkey) mixed together.
Preparation Steps:
- Bake fries in oven according to package directions, or deep fry/air fry if preferred, extra crispy helps prevent your poutine from becoming soggy.
- While the fries are frying, warm your gravy on low heat, ensuring it’s smooth and ready to pour.
- Grate your cheese and set aside.
- Once the fries are golden and crispy, assemble some on a plate, crown them with cheese, and generously ladle gravy over the top, repeat in layers (layers is key to fantastic poutine)
Serving Suggestions and Flavor Variations
